PRESS RELEASE
The Cambodian Defenders Project issued a report
today that a workshop will be held next week in Siem Reap with the purpose
of encouraging justice reform concerning cultural rights and cultural
property.
The
workshop, entitled the “21st Workshop on Administration of
Justice Reform Relating to Cultural Rights and Protection of Cultural
Property in Cambodia” will take place in Siem Reap Province on June 12
and 13 at the Freedom Hotel. “It is very important to start discussing
the protection of cultural rights and cultural property in Cambodia,”
says Mr. Kong Sam Onn, Project Manager of the Publications and Legal
Advocacy department of CDP. “Since the end of the civil war, cultural
property in Cambodia has continuously been destroyed. The Royal Government
lacks the mechanisms to protect cultural property; the existing
institutions are not strong enough.”
One
objective of the workshop is for the participants, through brainstorming,
to generate recommendations on how to protect cultural rights and
property. Also, the CDP seeks
to establish cooperation among competing authorities. In addition, CDP
hopes to encourage enforcement of the UNIDROIT convention of 1995.
H.E
Bun Narith, General Director of Aspara Authority, will inaugurate the
workshop. Commentators of the workshop include H.E. Chuch Kheoun,
Under-Secretary of State of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Art and Mr.
Sok Sam Oeun, Director of CDP. The workshop is funded by the New Zealand
Agency for International Development (NZAID).
